Healthy

‘Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’ (World Health Organisation – since 1948). So we’re not setting our sights high or anything … How about the Hub is a place we can explore together what the hallmarks of healthy ministry might be? Not a checklist of dos and don’ts. Not a prescription. Probably not something we can easily measure or define. And definitely not a hyped up ‘gospel of success’. But I guess we know it when we see it, glimpse it, taste it, feel it – whether for ourselves or in others? We don’t have answers, but it always helps to start with asking good questions. What are some of the habits and mindsets and environments that nurture healthy ministry? I'm reminded of one of the safety instructions you always get at the beginning of a flight - don't try to sort out other people's oxygen mask until your own is in place (or words to that effect). If you don't take care of yourself or ensure that someone is looking after you, you'll be in no position to help others. I've seen too many church leaders (lay as well as ordained) burned-out, which is tragic for them, for their families, for their churches and ultimately for the people whom they would otherwise have served. Your own resilience is part of the pastoral care that you offer, and you need to get away from any sense of guilt for taking time to safeguard yourself.
